1.嘘 (Uso; Lie)
2. 日傘 (Higasa; Sun Shade)
3.誘感コレクション (Live at日本武道館 2008.11.2) (Yuukan Collection [Live at Nippon Budokan 2008.11.2])
SID’s third major-label single, Uso, was released on April 29, 2o09. The A-side was used as the first ending theme to Studio Bones’ anime series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. No word yet on chart positions or number of copies sold.
It would be easy for me to compare Uso to SID’s breakout single, Monokuro no Kiss, as it was an immensely catchy song and certainly what brought SID into the spotlight, but it wouldn’t be fair as Uso is a great song in its own right. With a crisp and upbeat arrangement courtesy of the band’s drummer Yuuya, add Mao’s bright vocals and wistful lyrics into the mix and it sure looks like SID has another winner on their hands. Definitely one of the best songs by a new artist I’ve heard in a while.
SID takes it down a notch with the nostalgic and pretty Higasa. It seems a bit small compared to the A-side, but it is a very pleasant song and definitely draws off the reminiscent themes of Uso. Mao’s voice is nice as always, except for the last few lines where he basically screams. As far as B-sides go, this one is pretty decent at best, if not a bit forgettable.
Yuukan Collection (Live at Nippon Budokan 2008.11.2) is a really cool live track. Starting off at first with piano and some ethnic-sounding hand drums, the song breaks into SID’s signature rock style after about a minute. Mao’s live voice is great, a novelty in an industry where live performances often fall short of the expectations set by the studio recording.
Single Review: As a new artist on a major label, SID are doing a really awesome job of churning out single after awesome single. With help from connections to popular anime series, they seem to be really breaking into the mainstream and I can hardly wait to hear what this promising band has in store.
Single Grade: A+
